Do brown or dark skin tones actually need sunscreen?
Yes. Melanin gives some natural protection, but nowhere near enough to prevent UV damage, and brown skin is especially prone to what UV does trigger: pigmentation, dark patches, and marks that take months to fade. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is the single most effective step for keeping deeper skin tones even.
Why do some sunscreens make brown skin look dark, grey or ashy?
Mineral filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflect visible light, which reads as a white or grey film on deeper skin. Some chemical formulas also oxidise and turn patchy through the day. uncaast counters both: coated, micronised zinc at a low percentage, a photostable filter system, and an iron-oxide tint calibrated to your skin tone instead of against it.
Is tinted sunscreen good for dark skin?
It is usually the best option. The iron oxides that create the tint also help block visible light, which contributes to pigmentation on melanin-rich skin, and the tint is what cancels the white cast. The catch is the shade has to actually match, which is why we make three and test each on the skin tones it is made for.
